Dive Aliwal Shoal with us

The Aliwal Shoal is a protected marine area off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is formed by an ancient dune and is about 5 km long. The shoal was named after the near-sinking of the ship “Aliwal” in 1849.

It is a popular scuba diving destination for all levels of training, from Open water to more advanced technical dives. This popularity is due to its spectecular  marine life  including corals, tropical and subtropical fish and large predators with regular sightings of Ragged-tooth sharks, mantas, moray eels, stingrays and other marine creatures. Divers may also spot dolphins, humpback whales, whale sharks, and hammerheads depending on the time of year.

The shoal’s water temperatures range from a warm 24 degrees Celsius in summer to around 19 degrees Celsius in winter thanks to its location on the inner edge of the Mozambique current. Popular diving sites on the shoal include the cathedral, the pinnacles, the north sands and the ragged-tooth shark caves.

The Reef

Aliwal Shoal is a fossilized sandstone reef, not a coral reef. It was once land that became submerged over 5.3 million years as glaciers melted. The shoal is 1.5 km wide and 4 km long, with dive sites ranging from 5 to 27 meters deep. The reefs have many dive sites and it is suitable for any dive-level certification from open Water to technical diving.
The shoal’s topography with its pinnacles, caves and gullies makes for an exciting diving experience. It has been rated as one of the top 10 dive spots in the world by Jacques Cousteau and the rocky launch divers say it is as exiting as the dives.

The Recks

Aliwal Shoal has 2 wreck sites: The SS Nebo wreck which was a British steamboat. It sank in 1884. It was on its way to Durban from England when it sank close to the coast with 4500 tonnes of metal cargo that was planned for building a new railway.

The Produce an old cargo vessel that was reportedly carrying molasses. The shit hit the Northern Pinnacles on Aliwal Shoal in 1974, while traveling to England from Durban.

baited dive

The sharks commonly seen on our baited dives on Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks throughout the year are Bull Sharks (Zambezis), Oceanic Blacktips and Duskies.

From February to May each year we are privileged to have a very important visitor, the Tiger Shark. It is the ultimate shark dive encounter. This majestic and powerful animal visits our baited dives very often during the season and so you can get really close for a chance to get that perfect underwater photography.
