WHY PROTEA BANKS!
Protea Banks is not a typical reef dive. It is a deep offshore reef off Shelly Beach where strong currents, open ocean conditions and the warm Agulhas Current come together to create one of the most active shark environments in the world!
Known for advanced drift diving, Protea Banks delivers consistent encounters with large pelagic sharks. Divers regularly see tiger sharks, bull sharks (Zambezi sharks), hammerheads sharks, oceanic blacktips and ragged-tooth sharks.
What makes this reef stand out is the mix of raw ocean conditions and high shark activity. You can do deep reef dives as well as baited shark dives, giving you both natural encounters and closer, controlled observations.
Protea Banks is widely regarded as one of the top shark diving destinations in South Africa for its consistency, species diversity and true open ocean experience. This is advanced shark diving. Deep, dynamic and real.
Why Dive Protea Banks with us!
Dive In Adventure Tours is built on real, local experience diving Protea Banks, one of the most advanced shark diving sites in South Africa.
Our crew works these waters daily, running structured dives in strong currents, deep reef environments, and open ocean conditions.
Safety is central to every dive. Each trip includes a full briefing, experienced guide supervision, and GPS tracking for every diver to support safe drift diving.
We specialize in both reef dives and ethical baited shark dives, with regular sightings of tiger sharks, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, Ragged-tooth sharks and oceanic blacktips. There are no cages and no feeding, only controlled, real shark encounters.
Small group diving allows for better positioning in the water, improved safety, and a more focused experience for each diver.
We are a team of dedicated shark divers who value the ocean, the wildlife, and the people we dive with. Whether it is your first time at Protea Banks or you have dived it before, the goal is always the same, a safe, well-run, and memorable shark diving experience in South Africa.
Baited shark diving at Protea Banks
Ready to dive with sharks at Protea Banks?
Baited shark diving offers a controlled open water experience where you can observe sharks up close, without cages or barriers.
Dives take place at around 10 to 15 metres, allowing longer bottom time and extended encounters with oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks, and seasonal tiger sharks.
We use a scent trail only, no feeding, to attract sharks already in the area, keeping the experience natural and ethical.
This is one of the most effective ways to experience shark behaviour up close in Protea Banks, in real ocean conditions with experienced guides.
Protea Banks Reef shark dive
A reef dive at Protea Banks is real open ocean shark diving in South Africa.
This deep offshore reef lies in the Agulhas Current, creating strong drift conditions, rich marine life, and consistent encounters with large pelagic sharks.
Dives typically range from 30 to 36 metres and involve drift diving along the reef, multilevel profiles, and blue water ascents depending on current and conditions.
Divers regularly encounter tiger sharks, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, ragged-tooth sharks, and oceanic blacktip sharks moving naturally along the reef.

The dives with Dive in Adventures Protea Banks were a true delight. The dive site itself is the best I've ever dived in, and that, combined with the dive center... read more and the fantastic team, made it a huge pleasure for me and everyone else who dives there, as customer service is their top priority. The whole team radiates enthusiasm for what they do. I've never seen so many different sharks without having been baited. Dive in Adventures provided hot showers, even towels, and snacks as well. The latter isn't really common in South Africa. Thank you so much for this unforgettable time.

February 2, 2026Had my first ever dive in SA with Dive in Adventures while on a road trip. They did not have any dives planned for the upcoming day I was there,... read more but they still found a way to make it happen. The waves and current were nice and strong, really liked the full set up! Had a drift reef dive (like 6km from Northern to Southern Pinnacle) and a drift baited shark dive. Saw a lot of sharks in both dives with good visibility. What a great experience with a very professional and a friendly team! Keep going and seems to me I need to return for the sardine run someday! Thanks for everything!

February 2, 2026I booked a baited shark dive and when I got there I was told we’d be doing two reef dives. That was not what I booked and no one seemed... read more to realise the mistake. We were highly overcharged for a reef dive as the second didn’t even end up happening and when I was told I could do the baited shark dive the next day, I woke up to a message saying it was cancelled and I was not given an option to dive on a different day. Highly disappointed in the customer service and organisation by this company.

January 9, 2026Just spent 5 days diving with the incredible and professional team at Dive in. Patricia runs one of the only dive centres in the area. Everything from enquiring... read more about booking to arriving and then ultimately diving was professional, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. A team very knowlegeable about the area, sea conditions with an ethical approach to spending time diving with Sharks. Seeing Hammerheads for the first time was truly special. Looking forward to diving with the team again sometime soon.

Diving with Dive in Adventures was truly unforgettable. I can’t recommend Patricia and her incredible team highly enough, every single person works so hard, and it shows in every detail... read more of the experience. The dive centre is unique, organised and an inviting space, it was such a pleasure to dive here. We had several dives planned with them, in total we did 12-13 dives, but during the first few days the conditions were so rough that no boats were allowed to launch. Instead of letting us miss out, Patricia went above and beyond to organise dives for us at Aliwal Shoal, which turned out to be fantastic. Her dedication to making sure we had the best possible experience meant so much to us. I’ll be honest, before diving Protea Banks, I was nervous. I had heard so much about the strong currents and how unpredictable it can be. But from the moment we started diving with Mike, all of that melted away. His calm nature, steady presence, and endlessly positive energy made me feel completely at ease. His briefings were thorough, reassuring, and enthusiastic, I always felt fully prepared. The boat crew, Kan and Rupert, are amazing, such a great group of people working seamlessly together, giving their absolute best every single day. Even when the currents were strong and we couldn’t reach the caves where the raggies had been sighted, we drifted along the reef where there’s beautiful life and eventually ascending into the blue where the sharks made their appearance. On our trip we encountered bull sharks, oceanic blacktips, schools of hammerheads, tiger sharks, ragged tooth’s, and silky or duskys (Mike and Lalo were trying to ID them). Every dive felt wild and special in its own way. Before the trip, we had talked about how incredible it would be to see schooling hammerheads, it was at the very top of our wish list. When it actually happened, it felt surreal. Pure excitement. One of those moments you’ll never forget. Thanks to the team’s determination and positivity, we made it to the caves and saw the raggies and it was so special. Being there with them, in that space, is something I’ll always treasure. Between dives, we were so well looked after, warm coffee, delicious biscuits, and honestly the best sandwiches ever! After the dives, there were hot showers, fresh water, and homemade muffins waiting for us at the dive centre. It’s those thoughtful touches that make such a difference. On our last day, Patricia organised a braai for everyone. It was such a lovely way to end the trip, sharing stories, connecting with like-minded people, and forming new friendships. We felt so happy and so well cared for that we didn’t want to leave. In fact… we only managed to stay away for two days before coming back for four more dives, with beautiful conditions and dolphins welcoming us back! Patricia, thank you to you and your entire team for creating such a meaningful and memorable experience for us. We felt truly looked after from start to finish, Lalo and I cannot wait to return 🩵🦈 lots of love!

February 13, 2026This is the best dive center for diving in the incredible waters of Protea Banks! Patricia and her team are real superstars! Everyone in the team is warm, welcoming, and professional.... read more They run like a well-oiled machine! From Michael's briefings, which make you very excited to go diving, but at the same time, not slacking any of all the safety procedures and marine life (he is a shark whisperer!), to the good care that Kan (skipper) and Rupert (spotter) take of all the customers on board, and not forgetting the person preparing delicious sandwiches for the surface interval, homemade muffins for when you come back to the dive center, and coffee and cold water. The dive center itself is cozy, well organised, and settled in a beautiful and chill space, which you really do not want to leave. Patricia, the owner, is the most wonderful and hard working dive center owner I have ever met, always on top of everything! Last, but not least, the diving: In 13 dives with this dive center, I saw schools of hammerheads, tons of bull sharks, tiger sharks, oceanic blacktips, raggies, silky sharks, and dusky shark! What a blast, it surpassed, by far, my most optimistic expectations for this dive trip! Now, I am only thinking about when I can come back and dive again in Protea Banks with Dive in Adventures, for some more shark diving! See you guys soon, and keep the good work! Big hug from Lalo & Tati!
