Baited Shark Dive Protea Banks South Africa

No Cage , Ethical, Safe & Unforgettable

Real Shark Diving. No cages. No feeding

Baited shark diving at Protea Banks is one of the most exciting shark experiences in South Africa.

Come face to face with oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and, in season, tiger sharks. No cages, no barriers. Just you in the water, watching real behaviour up close.

We do not feed sharks. We use a controlled scent trail from sardines to attract sharks already in the area, under strict Marine Protected Area rules.

Just a few kilometres off Shelly Beach, Dive In Adventure Tours delivers ethical, professional and safety-focused shark diving.

Whether it’s your first encounter or your hundredth, expect pure adrenaline, close interactions and a deep respect for these powerful animals.

How the BAITED dive works

A baited shark dive at Protea Banks offers a controlled open water experience where divers can observe sharks up close in clear blue water.

At Dive In Adventure Tours, baited dives are structured around safety, positioning, and ethical practice, allowing for consistent encounters without feeding or artificial interaction.

Your dive begins at Shelly Beach with a detailed briefing covering dive procedures, shark behaviour, and positioning in the water.

After gearing up, the boat launch takes you through the surf and approximately 7 km offshore to the dive site.

At the site:

A bait drum is deployed at around 8 to 10 metres

A scent trail is used to attract sharks already in the area

Divers descend to approximately 10 to 15 metres and remain in a controlled mid-water position under the supervision of the dive team.

Baited dives are designed to provide longer and closer shark encounters compared to reef dives.

Common sightings include:

Oceanic blacktip sharks

Bull sharks (Zambezi sharks)

Seasonal tiger sharks

Sharks move freely around the group, allowing divers to observe spacing, movement, and behaviour in open water.

Ethical Diving , No Sharks Are Harmed

At Dive In Adventure Tours, we keep shark diving  ethical and controlled. No feeding our touching.

We do not feed sharks or change their behavior. A light scent trail attracts sharks already in the area so we can observe them naturally.

All dives operate under permit and strict Marine Protected Area regulations.

No cages, no touching, no interference.
No hooks, no lines, no contact.

Bait drums are removed after every dive and sharks are never conditioned to associate people with food.

Our goal is respect, education and real encounters that help change how people see sharks.

Baited shark dive is one of the best experiences for underwater photography

This baited shark dive is one of the best experiences for underwater photography in South Africa.

Because the dive is shallow and done in clear blue water, there is usually good natural light. This allows you to shoot without heavy lighting and capture clean, sharp images.

The sharks come close and move around you, which gives you real opportunities for wide angle shots, close passes, and eye level encounters. Oceanic blacktips are fast and active, while bull sharks often come in slower and closer, perfect for strong images.

You don’t need to be a professional photographer. Even with a basic setup or action camera, you can get great shots on this dive.

For more advanced photographers, this is a perfect environment to work on composition, movement, and natural behaviour without the limits of a reef.

Baited Shark Dive Protea Banks

Protea Banks is one of the best places in the world for shark diving. Located off the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, this offshore reef is known for strong currents and high shark activity.

Our baited shark dive is designed to give divers a close and controlled experience with sharks in blue water. It is one of the most reliable ways to see sharks in South Africa.
