The Sardine Run is an annual phenomenon that takes place on the east coast of South Africa from June to July. Experiencing this spectacle is a privilege not to be missed.

Visitors can snorkel, free dive, and scuba dive around the sardine bait balls, witnessing the entire marine food chain at work. If you’re lucky, you might even swim with huge pods of dolphins and see whales breaching far out at sea. Thousands of birds dive at high speed for the sardines, creating what looks like a dance in the sky. The ocean comes alive with predators on the hunt, including thousands of gannets, sharks, whales, dolphins, sailfish, and other game fish—all part of the feeding frenzy.

Sardine Run information
Our sardine run is based in Coffee Bay, a town on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, located about 250 kilometers southwest of the city of Durban.
The Wild Coast is known for its breathtaking views, untouched beaches and stunning scenery, including dramatic coastlines, jagged cliffs, sheltered bays, and rolling hills and valleys. It is also home to colorful villages of the Xhosa people.
This area was part of the former homeland of Transkei during the Apartheid era, and as you cross the Wild Coast, you’ll mostly hear greetings in Xhosa rather than English. The Wild Coast is popular for hiking, surfing road trips, and the SARDINE RUN. It’s definitely “off the beaten path” and offers an incredible adventure on land and in the sea.
