This is more than just a dive trip. It is a full South African experience that connects ocean and land in one seamless adventure. You move from relaxed diving to wild offshore encounters, and then into the heart of the bush, all in a natural flow that builds the experience step by step.

Your journey begins at Aliwal Shoal, where conditions are more relaxed and the diving is the perfect way to ease into the trip. These reefs are full of life, offering beautiful dives with sharks, rays, turtles, and a wide variety of marine species. It is the ideal starting point to get comfortable in the water and enjoy the rhythm of diving without pressure.

From there, everything shifts as you head to Protea Banks. This is where the real adventure begins. Deep offshore pinnacles, open ocean conditions, and powerful currents create one of the most exciting shark diving environments in the world. Every dive is dynamic and unpredictable, with encounters that can include bull sharks, hammerheads, oceanic blacktips, and even tiger sharks. It is raw, real, and unforgettable.

To finish the journey, you leave the ocean behind and head into the African bush for a 3 day safari. Here, the pace slows down, but the experience becomes just as powerful. Early morning drives, wide open landscapes, and close encounters with wildlife bring a completely different side of Africa to life. Seeing elephants, rhinos, lions, and giraffes in their natural environment is something that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Throughout the entire experience, everything is taken care of for you. Diving, accommodation, transport, and guiding are all organised by a team that knows these areas deeply. All you need to do is arrive and enjoy every moment.

Bookings & Payments

A 50% deposit is required to confirm any dive package. Bookings are only secured once the deposit is received.
The remaining balance must be paid before the start of the first activity.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

If Dive In Adventure Tours cancels any activity due to unsafe ocean or weather conditions, a full refund will be issued for the cancelled dives or activities.
No refunds or partial refunds will be given in the following cases:
- If a diver chooses not to dive
- If a course or package has already started
- No-shows or late arrivals
Changes to bookings are subject to availability.

Diving Requirements

Protea Banks is an advanced dive site. To participate in reef dives, divers must:
- Hold a minimum Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent)
- Have appropriate recent diving experience
- Be comfortable with deep dives, drift diving, and strong currents
Dive In Adventure Tours reserves the right to refuse participation if a diver is not suitably qualified or safe to dive.

Dive schedules are dependent on weather and ocean conditions.
Dive In Adventure Tours reserves the right to:

- Adjust schedules
- Substitute activities where necessary

FAQS

What is included in the dive package?

The package includes guided dives on Protea Banks and/or Aliwal Shoal, depending on your itinerary. It can also include accommodation, safari activities, and transfers if selected.
Each package is flexible, so we build it around your travel dates and preferences.

How many dives will I do per day?

We normally do two dives per morning. On good weather days, a third dive can sometimes be arranged, but this is not common.

What type of dives are included?

You can expect a mix of reef dives and baited shark dives. Both are shark dives, just different styles.
Reef dives are deeper and more technical, while baited dives are shallow and focused on close shark encounters.

What sharks can I see?

Protea Banks is famous for sharks. Depending on the season, you can see:
Hammerheads, bull sharks, tiger sharks, oceanic blacktips, and ragged-tooth sharks.
Dolphins and whales are also often seen, especially in winter.

Is Protea Banks suitable for beginners?

No, Protea Banks is an advanced dive site.
You need to be Advanced Open Water certified with good experience and comfortable in deep water, currents, and drift diving.

Do you offer refresher dives?

Yes, we can arrange a refresher session if you have not dived in a while.
In some cases, we may recommend doing an easier dive first before going to Protea Banks.

Is the baited dive safe and ethical?

Yes. We do not feed sharks.
We only use a scent from sardines to attract sharks that are already in the area.
All dives follow strict rules under our permit, and divers are briefed clearly on how to behave in the water.

How big are the dive groups?

We keep groups small and personal.
This allows for better safety, better briefings, and a more enjoyable experience.

What if the weather is bad?

Your safety comes first.
If we cannot dive due to weather or sea conditions, we will reschedule or refund the affected dives.

6 Dives — Protea Banks

Dive Protea Banks, one of the top shark diving sites in the world and a completely different experience from Aliwal Shoal. This is a deep offshore reef, formed by an ancient fossilised sand dune, lying between 30 and 40 metres, where the open ocean meets the structure and creates incredible marine life.

Diving here is wild, raw and unpredictable. Strong currents bring nutrients and with them a constant presence of sharks. You can encounter bull sharks moving confidently through the reef, oceanic blacktips circling in the blue, and during the season, large schools of hammerheads passing by in the distance. There is also always the chance of a tiger shark appearing, making every dive full of anticipation.

The dives are drift dives, often starting with a negative entry to reach the reef quickly. From there, you move with the current along pinnacles, caves and ledges, exploring the structure while keeping an eye on the blue for passing sharks. It is an advanced dive environment, but one that rewards you with some of the most exciting and memorable shark encounters you can have.

4 dives - Aliwal shoal

Dive the reefs of Aliwal Shoal and enjoy relaxed conditions with incredible marine life. This world famous reef offers a very different experience, with warm water, good visibility and a mix of reef and sand that attracts a wide variety of species.

Aliwal Shoal is best known for its ragged tooth sharks, often seen resting in caves and swimming calmly around divers. These encounters are close, peaceful and truly special, giving you time to observe their behaviour up close. Along the reef you can also see turtles, rays, moray eels and large schools of fish, making every dive rich and full of life.

The dives here are generally easier and more relaxed, making it the perfect start to your trip. It gives you time to get comfortable in the water, fine tune your buoyancy and enjoy the ocean before moving on to the deeper and more advanced dives at Protea Banks.

3 days Safari Elephant coast

From the ocean to the bush in just a few days.

Finish your journey with a 3 day safari that takes you from the ocean into the heart of the African bush. Based in St Lucia, this part of the trip offers a completely different pace, where the focus shifts from adrenaline to immersion in nature.

You will explore Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, one of the oldest game reserves in Africa and home to the Big 5. Spending a full day in the park gives you the chance to see elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes and, if lucky, lions and leopards.

The experience continues in iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique ecosystems. Here you will enjoy a boat cruise on the St Lucia estuary, where hippos and Nile crocodiles are seen up close, along with a rich variety of birdlife.

You will also explore Cape Vidal, where the bush meets the ocean, offering stunning coastal views and the chance to see wildlife in a completely different setting. As the day ends, a night safari brings a new side of the bush to life, where nocturnal animals emerge.

This 3 day safari completes the journey, giving you a full experience of South Africa, from sharks in the ocean to wildlife on land, all in one unforgettable trip.
